In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the state of Mississippi is challenging the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling on Roe v. Wade. Mississippi has a state law in place that bans abortions after 15 weeks and Jackson Women’s Health Organization is challenging this law, asking the Supreme Court to uphold its ruling in Roe and the “right to abortion.” If the Supreme Court upholds the Mississippi state law as constitutional, this would overrule Roe v. Wade and allow other states to place limits on abortion based on fetal age. This wouldn’t make abortion illegal, but would give the power back to the states to protect the lives of preborn children.
Currently, the wording in Iowa’s Constitution protects the right to an abortion, so even if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, abortion would still be protected in Iowa. That is why is important for you to get involved now! We need to encourage and support our state lawmakers to pass an Iowa constitutional amendment stating that the constitution does not secure a right to abortion. An amendment to the Iowa Constitution must be agreed upon by two successive General Assemblies and approved by a majority of the electors (we the people) voting at an election. The amendment was agreed upon in the last General Assembly and thus has been referred to the succeeding legislature, so we are a third of the way there! Once it is approved in this upcoming General Assembly, it will be put on the ballot for us to vote on.
The Church will never cease to do what it has always done - to pray, work, and serve until the day when every human life is protected in law, and welcomed in love. Until that day comes, and ever after, we will continue to care for women and children in need, so that every mother has the support to joyfully choose life.
Through the expansive social ministries of the Church, we do a lot to help mothers in need:
Over 150,000 low-income women deliver their babies at Catholic hospitals each year.
Chruch ministires like Catholic Charities serve women and their children long after they are born, offering comprehensive social services to those in need.
The Sisters of Life are a growing religious community of women who, by their way of life, bear witness to the beauty and dignity of every human life. The Sisters welcome pregnant women into their homes and provide life-changing material and spiritual resources to women in crisis.
Walking with Moms in Need is another rapidly growing initiative, sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This parish-based process helps parishioners connect with local mothers facing difficult or challenging pregnancies, identifying local resources and filling the gaps so that pregnant and parenting women receive the material, spiritual, and emotional support they need.
Legal protection must be accompanied by more care for mothers and their children. In God's eyes, all human life is sacred. God has a plan for every person - every mother and every pre-born child.
Pro-life Americans of all faiths have stepped forward to found thousands of pregnancy care centers, and could be counted on to provide even more help as needed.
